7 Quick Tips To Get Your Garden Ready For Winter

Our Tips For When Winter's On Its Way

It won't be long before the leaves start to fall and the weather begins to turn; winter is on the horizon. The autumn is a fantastic time to get jobs done in the garden. Once the summer growth starts to slow, it free's up more time to tackle those essential jobs and get your garden ship shape for the winter. Read on to see what you need to do to give your garden that all-important protection.

1. Treat Your Fence

Your fence is your boundary and your privacy, so it's worth looking after. Winter weather can be harsh and damaging to fences, so why not treat your fence with a preservative treatment process? We recommend you do this at least once a year, autumn being the best time. We've laboured with a brush for years, but why not treat yourself to a sprayer and make light work of a potentially time-consuming job? We use Postsaver Creostain, available in Light & Dark Brown – it's a proven favourite across thousands of our customers, including professional fencing contractors.

2. Check For Post Rot

With winter weather come winter winds. If your fence posts are rotten, this could have the potential to pull down your entire fence or gateway, leaving you with an eye-watering bill. To test your posts, hold each post firmly and give them a wobble. If there's excessive movement, the posts will need replacing. Check out our top tips on how to repair yours here.

3. Cover Up Your Garden Beds

Just like your fence, your garden beds need protection as well. For the green-fingered among you, you'll know the importance of a layer of finished compost for your beds. A little addition of compost helps to prevent soil erosion, limits weed growth and gives your soil a chance to absorb some well-earned nutrients over the winter months. Add a layer of 1-2 inches thick, not too much more, though, as the soil beneath won't be able to freeze over the winter. The winter freeze is key to killing off any unwanted soil diseases.

4. Empty Any Outdoor Containers

Don't forget to empty those containers like flower pots and stone planters. Store them somewhere indoors or covered in a shed to prevent any frost or weather from getting to them. This ensures your garden accessories don't crack in the winter weather.

5. Get Those Leaves Up!

We all know the hassle of picking up autumn leaves but trust us when we say it's worth it. Uncollected leaves could damage your lawn, and in some cases, they can even cause disease in trees if uncollected. So give your garden the best chance by keeping it tidy.

6. Organise The Shed

Once the final jobs in the garden are complete, it's always an excellent opportunity to sort through the shed and get everything ready for the spring so you can hit the ground running. First, why not clean off those tools and check for any damage? Then, wash off any dirt and dry it before returning to the shed to keep them in good shape and ready for the spring.

7. Treat That Decking

Much like your fence, your decking needs love and protection too. After a summer of use, it's sensible to apply a layer of protection to your deck. Ensure it's dry and swept clean before applying a stain like Postsaver Creostain. A stain will revive colour and give you some well-needed protection against the winter rain and weather

Pro-Tip

Don't waste those fallen leaves. If you've got space, why not create a compost bin for your waste. Having a few compost bins next to each other is an excellent way of rotating your waste, and it means you will always have compost on hand.
