BRE EN252 Independent Test Results

In April 2000, Postsaver commissioned the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to undertake a European Standard EN252 1989 Field test to determine the relative effectiveness of wood preservative in ground contact.

At year eight the test stakes were given a decay rating of twenty due to high levels of decay, four stakes had also wholly failed and were removed from the field test. By year twenty all remaining stakes have failed with a decay rating of forty.

With Postsaver

Postsaver protected posts showing very little if any signs of decay after a 20 year testing period by the BRE

With Postsaver, the test stakes at year eight have a decay rating of just three, and this is only at the unprotected tip of the stake. At year twenty, they only had a decay rating of six, again at the tip of the stake. With no breakages on impact, hammer testing demonstrated the absence of decay in the sleeved zone.

Method

Scotts Pine test stakes were dip treated for 30 minutes in a 3% solution of CCA – Copper/Chrome/Arsenic (to provide a so-called mild preservative treatment)

Twenty test stakes in total were used in the following format:

• Ten test stakes with low-level preservative treatment

• Ten test stakes with low-level preservative treatment but also fitted with Postaver ground-line barrier sleeves.

The test stakes were then installed at BRE test site at Princes Risborough and later at the test site in Watford.

The stakes were graded for decay using a scale of 1 to 40.
